TIJUANA, Baja California, June 1, 2008.- Peru took
advantage of the error plagued performance of its
opponent and defeated Cuba in straight sets by
score of 26-24, 25-14, 25-16. Peru is now 2-1
after three days of action in Pool B, while Cuba
is 0-3.
Patricia Soto, Carla Rueda and Mirtha Uribe led
the winners with 12, 11 and 10 points
respectively. Yaima Ortiz was the best Cuban with
10.
The first set can be considered the difference in
the match. Both teams exchanged the lead until the
second time-out when Cuba was ahead 16-15. The
Cubans eventually led 22-19 but Peru mounted a
reaction with powerful spikes of Uribe, Soto and
the young Rueda.
Cuban could not handle properly the effective
Peruvian serves for the next two sets won easily
by the South Americans.
“It is important to have pressed with our serves
and improved our defense and setting,” said
Francisco Dos Santos, the coach of Peru. “Now we
have to think quietly about Brazil.”
“We need to correct our mistakes,” said Cuban
Felipe Calderon. “This is a very young team and we
hope this is the beginning of the preparation for
the Olympic Games of 2012.” |
